Advocating to Improve Public Policies for Working Families

The Labor Project for Working Families is a resource for unions, state labor federations and central labor councils, as well as advocacy groups, on advancing family friendly public policies.
California Initiatives
- The Labor Project for Working Families partnered with the California Labor Federation and others on the successful passage of California’s Paid Family Leave law.
- As the lead convener of the California Work and Family Coalition, the Labor Project for Working Families worked on three bills – SB 727, AB 537, and SB 836 – to expand the state’s paid and unpaid family leave laws, and prohibit discrimination based on family responsibilities. Even though the bills were passed by the Senate, Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed them in October 2007. For more information, go to www.paidfamilyleave.org.
- As a leader in the California Work and Family Coalition, the Labor Project for Working Families is currently supporting a campaign to pass the California Paid Sick Days bill (AB 2716)
National Initiatives
- We are working with coalitions in other states across the country (Georgia, Massachusetts, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Washington and Wisconsin) to expand and/or adopt a range of family leave policies including Paid Family Leave and Paid Sick Days.
