American Federation of Teachers Local 3695 and the University of Connecticut: AFT negotiated part time return to work after the birth or adoption of a child. Parents may work half-time for up to 6 months and may request half time work for up to 12 months; leave beyond the first 6 months is subject to management approval. In addition, there is six weeks of paid leave for child bearing and up to six weeks of paid accrued time for both the mother and father without management approval.
Northern California Newspaper Guild Local 52 & San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner: Local 52 successfully negotiated a provision that allows employees (mothers and fathers) to work part time until their child is in kindergarden. The part-time status and schedule of work must be mutually agreed upon by the employer and employee.
SEIU Local 790 & San Francisco Unified School District: SEIU successfully negotiated a provision that allows employees to voluntary elect to work a reduced work week for a specific period of time. Approval is required. The reduced work week shall not be less than twenty hours per week for a period of not less than three nor more than six continuous months during the fiscal year. Pay, vacation, holidays and sick pay shall be reduced in accordance with the reduced work week. Voluntary reduction of hours shall have no effect on health service coverage, dental coverage, salary step increases and seniority for layoff purposes.
Service Employees International Union Local 715 and Santa Clara County: SEIU Local 715 won a voluntary reduced time policy under which members may request a reduction in their work hours of 1 percent, 2 percent, 5 percent or 20 percent. This reduction in hours my last for up to six months. While working reduced hours, employees keep their full-time status for the purpose of benefits and seniority.
