Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild Local 35 and Bureau of National Affairs: The Newspaper Guild Local 35 and the Bureau of National Affairs agreed that compulsory overtime should be avoided wherever feasible. Members who request that they be excused form working overtime will not have to unless no other appropriate employee is available.
United Auto Workers bargaining goals: UAW bargaining goal in 1996 included issues related to excessive overtime and hours worked which can adversely affect family relationships and safety on the job. Cutting overtime and work hours is also a way to create more jobs. The overtime goal required employers to recall laid-off workers and hire new workers instead of scheduling excessive overtime. Increase financial penalties on companies that assign excessive overtime.
Communications Workers of America Local 7777 and U.S. West: CWA Local 7777 won an agreement with U.S. West that will limit mandatory overtime. Beginning in January, 1999, forced overtime for members will be limited to 16 hours in a week. By January, 2001, the limit will be a maximum of eight hours forced overtime in a week. C.W.A. also bargained for limits on the number of weeks in a month members may be expected to work overtime. As of January, 1999, members will be guaranteed at least one week without overtime each month. As of January 2001, they will be guaranteed two weeks per month without overtime.
