United Auto Workers in Tonawanda , New York: UAW pulled together a consortium of unions and employers to develop child care programs to provide child care to parents who work non-traditional hours. The Tonawanda Business Community Child Care Consortium includes the UAW/General Motors and UAW/American Axle and Manufacturing, Praxair Inc., and DuPont Co. The Consortium with the assistance of Childcare Network, worked with the community to develop a daytime, before and after school program. The program opens at 5:30 a.m. and is open during holidays and vacations. Another program provides early morning and late night childcare. An emergency back up telephone network was established to connect parents to providers when their regular child care was unavailable. Consortium members receive a discount at these programs.
