Adoption Benefit

Communication Workers of America, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and AT&T: The unions negotiated with AT&T for reimbursement up to $3,000 for expenses associated with the adoption of a minor child, including agency fees, court costs and necessary medical and legal fees.

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers local 1245 and Pacific Gas & Electric Co.: IBEW Local 1245 has an agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric Co. for an adoption assistance program. The benefit reimburses employees up to $2000 for expenses associated with adopting a child. Expenses which are covered include legal fees, court costs, agency fees and transportation. The union also negotiated up to 8 hours of paid time off for court appearances connected with the adoption process. This time can be taken in increments of one hour or more.

Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers and Harvard University:
HUCTW, an AFSCME affiliate, negotiated a fund to provide financial assistance to help parents with the cost of adoption. The fund is administered jointly by the union and administration. In practice, the union decides the amount of assistance to be given to adoptive parents on a case by case basis. The average amount is approximately $3000 per adoption.
