Donated Leave

American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees Local 11 & State of Ohio: AFSCME negotiated a policy that allows employees to donate paid leave to a fellow employee who is otherwise eligible to accrue and use sick leave and is employed by the same Agency. The intent of the leave donation program is to allow employees to voluntarily provide assistance to their co-workers who are in critical need of leave due to the serious illness or injury of the employee or a member of the employee's immediate family.

Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 3 and the Van Bourg Law Firm: OPEIU Local 3 and the Van Bourg law Firm negotiated a policy that allows employees to transfer vacation and sick benefits in excess of two weeks to another employee with catastrophic illness. In addition, an employee who is leaving the firm may transfer all their accrued sick leave or vacation time to the co-worker in need.

The California State Employees Association and the State of California: CSEA Local 1000 has a Catastrophic Leave policy in their union contract with the State of California. This policy allows employees to extend their paid leave for a personal or family illness by using leave donated by co-workers. Employees transfer their paid leave time to another employee who faces financial hardship due to their own injury or illness or that of a spouse or child. Employees may transfer vacation, personal, holiday or annual leave. Total leave credits received by an employee are normally no more than three months, however this may be extended with approval to six months.
