Increasing Length of Leave

American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees District 84 Local 2719 & City of Pittsburg: AFSCME negotiated additional paid sick leave that employees can use to care for a spouse, child, step-child, parent or IRS eligible dependent with a serious health condition. The number of additional days is based on years of service: 1-3 years = 7 additional days, 3-15 years = 15 days, 15-25 years = 20 days, 25+ years = 26 days. This extended family medical leave is available each calendar year. Additionally, where an employee, during one year, has more than one qualifying family member who has a serious medical condition, that employee may use extended family medical leave for each serious health condition or family member provided they first take 20 days of their own time for each illness or family member and they have sufficient accumulated sick leave.

Communications Workers of America Local 1034 and the State of New Jersey: CWA Local 1034 established a voluntary furlough program as a pilot project for New Jersey state employees. The program allows workers to take unpaid leave for personal reasons such as family care or school vacation. While on furlough, employees would not lose any benefits, including health, insurance, pension and seniority accrual, vacation and sick time. Furloughs can be used to extend family leave, vacation or holiday time and may be used to extend leave taken under the Family and Medical Leave Act.
