American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Local 11 & State of Ohio: AFSCME successfully negotiated for an expanded definition of "family" for sick leave. Sick leave is granted to employees who are unable to work because of illness or injury of the employee or a member of his/her immediate family living in the employee's household or because of medical appointments or other ongoing treatment. The definition of "Immediate family" is: spouse, significant other ("significant other" as used in this Agreement, is defined to mean one who stands in place of a spouse, and who resides with the employee), child, stepchild, grandchild, parents, step-parents, mother-in-law, father-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandparents, great grandparents, brother, sister, step-sibling , brother-in-law, sister-in-law or legal guardian or other person who stands in the place of a parent. Sick leave may be granted to care for an employee's child/parent(s) regardless of whether or not the child/parent(s) is currently living in the same household, but in cases in which both parents are employed by the State, only one parent may be granted sick leave to care for a child at home on the same day.
