On-Site Child Care Centers

American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Public Employees Federation, Union of University Professors and the State of New York: AFSCME, PEF and UUP negotiated with the State of New York to develop the Empire State Child Care Network, which included 50 on-site child care centers serving children of state employees in 1991. A Labor/Management Child Care Advisory Committee administers a fund ($9.5 million in 1988-91) to set up non-profit centers and to support and expand the network of centers. Families are charged on a sliding scale for use of the services. Some centers also provide kindergarten, summer and after-school care for school-age children.

American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 2415 and Toledo Medical College of Ohio: The union bargained for an on-site child care center which is more than 70% subsidized by the college. Staff of the center are employed by the State of Ohio and are members of Local 2415, receiving good salaries and benefits.

United Auto Workers and Daimler Chrysler:
UAW and DaimlerChrysler have collaborated in the creation of a Child Development Center providing child care for union members and a summer program serving school-age kids in Huntsville, Alabama. They are exploring development of a consortium-operated or National Training Center-owned child care facility, expanding community resources and establishing a Latch Key Program for school-age children of union members.
