Penny Knapp, CWA Local 9417
“This is my favorite photo from ALL the strikes I have been through since 1967. This is my 4 year old grandson AJ on the CWA 9417 picket line against SBC/West in April 2004 at Stockton, CA. A week later when AJ was told he got a “strike” at his T-ball game he told his daddy “a strike is when you carry a picket sign” J. My mother’s entire career was with the restaurant workers union, my husband is with the musicians union, AJ’s daddy (and my son) is with the Federal Prisons union and I have been Vice President for CWA Local 9417 since 1985”.

David Hurlburt, CWA Local 9410
“Photo of three generations of union members in our family.  Seen in this photo is the newest addition to our family -- baby Max -- a member of the International Babyhood of Eaters, Soilers and Snuggles. Max is sitting on the lap of his great grandmother Lola Sen, a retired nurse and member of the California Nurses Association. To Lola’s left are Max’s parents -- Daniel (Dad), member of AFTRA and Daniele (Mom), member of SEIU Local 99 LAUSD. To the far left is Max’s grandfather (me), member of CWA Local 9410.

All of us benefited from the California Paid Family Leave law and CFRA/FMLA as well as Section 233 and Section 234 of California Labor Code.”

Gary Gaines, USW: Photo of my mom (center) with her six “children” at a gathering at my sister’s house for several family birthdays in February 2007. (Back row - left to right) All union members - Steelworker (Me), Firefighter, Teacher and Autoworker.  My sister on the lower left is also a union teacher.  My youngest sister runs a home daycare business.

"This is one of my favorite pictures for two reasons.  We are rarely able to get all of us together at the same time.  Second - it shows exactly what a crazy bunch my family is!"Gary Gaines

Chicago, Illinois: Catherine Baker of AFSCME Local 1195 with her husband Ray Brewer (a member of Working America) and sons in Chicago during the AFSCME 2006 International Convention. They were supporting the Resurrection Hospital employees.

"It was great to see the boys in action. I didn't see many parents with their children during the action. In fact, I think that mine were the only ones. My husband and I believe that our children need to see how unions work, participate, and be able to say that they helped.  We also realize that labor history and union history isn't taught in schools. We have decided that our boys need the information and we will give it to them."Catherine Baker of AFSCME Local 1195

“Having a picture of our boys with Mr. Bill Lucy gave us a starting point for a conversation about the sanitation workers and Dr. Martin Luther King.  Mr. Lucy knew him and walked the picket lines with him.”

Oakland, California: Yonah Camacho Diamond from CWA Local 9415 in Oakland sent this picture of Sofia and Eitan, Fall 2006.

"Sofia and Eitan (child care co-op friends) were so excited to snuggle in our backyard hammock together. They quickly discovered how to pull the ends together to play peek-a-boo. I love watching them figure out how to have fun in any place!" Sofia and Eitan from Oakland
