About the Labor Project for Working Families

Since 1992, the Labor Project for Working Families has been partnering with unions, union members, community based organizations and other activists to promote better work and family policies and programs, including paid family leave, child care, elder care and flexible work schedules.

Educating unions about work/family initiatives
We help unions, labor councils, and labor federations learn about work and family issues  through our resources, materials, and trainings on organizing, bargaining and developing policies to improve work/family benefits for workers.

Advocating public policies for working families
We forge essential collaborations between labor and family-focused advocacy groups to advance public policy efforts on issues such as paid family leave, paid sick days and funding for child care. In California, we helped pass the nation’s first paid family leave legislation.  We are now part of a national coalition of labor and community groups advocating for family leave policies in various states.

Promoting innovation and partnership between unions and communities
We support unions with contract negotiations, and work alongside union leaders to launch innovative programs that provide members access to or compensation for dependent care, paid family leave, and other work/family benefits to help balance jobs and personal responsibilities.

Mission

We believe that workers should not have to choose between their jobs and caring for their loved ones. Therefore, the Labor Project for Working Families strives to strengthen the capacity of unions to effectively advocate for work and family balance through organizing, collective bargaining and public policy.

Vision

We envision a world in which all workers have the time and resources they need to care for themselves and their loved ones.
